First spotted by astronomer Sihou Chen and colleagues from the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, 2017 OF201 was captured as a bright point of light in images taken by the Victor Blanco Telescope in Chile. Subsequent analysis of seven years of data from the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT) confirmed its presence and unique trajectory.
Measuring approximately 700 kilometers in diameter, 2017 OF201 qualifies as a dwarf planet. Currently located about 90.5 astronomical units (AU) from Earth — over 90 times farther than the distance to the Sun — it resides beyond Neptune’s orbit. Classified as a trans-Neptunian object, it crosses the Kuiper Belt, a region filled with icy bodies beyond Neptune.

Researchers discovered that 2017 OF201 approaches the Sun as close as 44.5 AU — similar to Pluto’s distance — but travels as far out as 1,600 AU at its farthest point. This highly elongated orbit is among the most stretched known in the Solar System. Scientists speculate that such an unusual path might be the result of gravitational interactions with a massive planet in the distant past.
Many trans-Neptunian objects share aligned orbits, which has been cited as indirect evidence supporting the existence of Planet Nine. However, 2017 OF201 stands apart from this orbital grouping. Princeton astronomer Erithas Young notes that this object distinctly deviates from the well-known clustering of orbits in the outer Solar System.
Simulations indicate that if Planet Nine exists, 2017 OF201 may eventually be ejected from the Solar System. Conversely, if no such planet exists, the object will continue its current orbit undisturbed. This insight challenges the Planet Nine hypothesis, although further observations are necessary before drawing definitive conclusions.
With an orbital period of approximately 25,000 years, 2017 OF201 spends only about 1% of its time close enough to Earth to be detected. Michigan University astronomer Kevin Napier suggests there could be hundreds of similar distant objects waiting to be discovered. The upcoming Vera C. Rubin Observatory, set to begin operations soon, promises to reveal many more such bodies and potentially unlock the mystery surrounding Planet Nine’s existence.
