Born on September 29, 1934, in Fiume, Italy (present-day Rijeka, Croatia), Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi was multilingual, fluent in Hungarian, Italian, and German. During World War II, while confined in an Italian prison camp, he discovered chess, which became a vital mental escape and coping mechanism during turbulent times.

This experience echoes Viktor Frankl’s logotherapy, which emphasizes finding purpose even in adversity, inspired by his own concentration camp experiences.

At 16, Csikszentmihalyi traveled to Switzerland and attended a lecture by Carl Jung, whose ideas deeply influenced him. Reflecting on his childhood during the war, he noted, "I witnessed adults struggling to make sense of the world, and Jung’s approach to understanding positive human experiences offered a new perspective."

Driven by a passion for psychology, he immigrated to the United States at 22, earning his BA in 1960 and PhD in 1965 from the University of Chicago. He later returned to the university as a professor, shaping minds until 2000.

He explained flow as "complete immersion in an activity for its own sake, where self-consciousness fades, time distorts, and every movement feels natural, much like improvising in jazz. Skills are fully utilized, and the experience is deeply fulfilling."
