Mido Develops Egypt’s Next Generation for European Football

Former Egypt striker Mido nurtures football talent at his Cairo academy to boost Egyptian representation in European leagues.

Former Egypt striker Ahmed \"Mido\" Hossam is focused on developing the next generation of Egyptian football talent through his Cairo-based academy, The Maker.

Despite Mohamed Salah’s success at Liverpool and Omar Marmoush’s move to Manchester City, Egypt still lags in European representation.

\"Comparing the number of Egyptian players in Europe with other top African nations reveals a significant gap,\" Mido, 42, told World Football on INLIBER World Service. \"We are 120 million strong, physically robust, and rich in talent. Four or five players in Europe is far below our potential.\"

Drawing on Experience

Mido spent 14 years at 11 clubs across seven countries before retiring in 2013. He endured highs and lows, including clashes with coaches at Ajax and on the national team. \"I could have achieved more,\" he admits. \"I share my mistakes with young players to stress the importance of perseverance and the right mindset.\"

Building Mindset and Adaptability

The Maker hosts around 100 boys, with plans to include girls. A dedicated psychology team works daily on mental strength, while language and cultural adaptation are key components. \"Speaking English and adapting to new environments is essential for success in Europe,\" Mido explains. \"Physical skills alone are not enough.\"

European Ambitions

Egyptian clubs have secured five of the last six African Champions League titles, yet Mido’s vision extends beyond Africa. \"Our goal is to place at least four to five players in Europe each year,\" he says. \"In ten years, we aim to see 60–73 graduates playing across Europe, with ongoing support tailored to their development.\"

Mido believes the right mindset, language skills, and mental resilience are crucial for Egyptian players to thrive in European football.
