Legal Battle Halts Samsung Pay Service in Russia

A Moscow arbitration court ruling has effectively suspended the operation of Samsung Pay in Russia following a patent infringement lawsuit.

The Moscow Arbitration Court has ruled in favor of Swiss company Sqwin SA, resulting in a ban on Samsung Pay's operation and the import of devices supporting the service into Russia. This decision could take effect within 30 days.

Samsung is accused of infringing on patent No. 2686003, which covers a method for conducting online payments using a buyer's mobile device and a seller's point-of-sale system. The Korean tech giant has the option to appeal the ruling within the next 30 days; otherwise, the ban will be enforced.

Samsung has stated that it is currently reviewing the legal documents and does not plan to alter its operations at this time. Legal experts note that Samsung may challenge not only the court's decision but also the validity of the patent itself, arguing a lack of novelty in the invention.

While this patent remains active, payment services like Apple Pay and Google Pay could also face potential bans if similar legal disputes arise.

If the ruling is upheld, Samsung will be required to stop pre-installing Samsung Pay on its smartphones sold in Russia.
