Jimmy Bone, former striker and manager, dies aged 75

Much-travelled Scottish striker and manager Jimmy Bone has died at the age of 75.

Playing career

Bone began with Partick Thistle before spells at Norwich City, Sheffield United, Celtic, St Mirren, Toronto Blizzard, Hong Kong Rangers and Heart of Midlothian, as well as two stints at Arbroath.

He won promotion with both Partick Thistle and Norwich City and starred in Thistle’s 4-1 League Cup final victory over Celtic in 1971.

Internationally, Bone earned two caps for Scotland, scoring in a 4-1 World Cup qualifier win over Denmark in 1974.

He also helped St Mirren capture the Anglo-Scottish Cup in 1980, with a 5-1 aggregate victory over Bristol City.

Managerial career

Bone began coaching as player-manager of Arbroath in 1985, later leading Airdrieonians to Premier Division promotion in 1991.

That same year he guided Power Dynamos of Zambia to the African Cup Winners’ Cup title.

He went on to manage St Mirren, East Fife, Wits University in South Africa and Stenhousemuir, alongside caretaker duties at Partick Thistle and assistant roles with Ross County and Chester City.

Jimmy Bone’s legacy spans a diverse playing and coaching career that left a lasting impact on clubs across three continents.
