Lin Qi did not die immediately; he spent a week in the hospital receiving over 40 liters of blood transfusions, but doctors ultimately could not save him.

Lin Qi was 39 years old and renowned as a billionaire entrepreneur, founder, and CEO of the gaming company Yoozoo Group. In 2020, he acquired the rights to Liu Cixin's 'The Three-Body Problem' and partnered with streaming giant Netflix and 'Game of Thrones' creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss for the adaptation. The billionaire also planned to develop new games and shows based on the novel.

Xu Yao led the negotiations for this deal. He admitted that if the contract terms were favorable, Lin Qi promised to involve him in the series production. However, Lin Qi broke his promise, leaving Xu unpaid. To evade punishment, Xu studied legal texts, but it did not prevent his conviction. The court found him guilty of murder and sentenced him to death.
