Mercedes driver George Russell says he "feels ready to fight for a championship" after a commanding win at the Singapore Grand Prix.

Russell claimed his second victory of the season, following his win in Canada, on the same Singapore track where he crashed out from third place in 2023.

He topped a strong field by finishing ahead of Red Bull's Max Verstappen, with McLaren's Lando Norris third and championship leader Oscar Piastri fourth.

"I'm a very different driver today compared to a few years ago," Russell said. "I feel more complete and confident. I know exactly what to do in every situation. Of course, I had normal pre-race nerves, but no extra pressure – it just felt like another race I could win."

He credited his improvement to experience and a more relaxed approach: "Earlier in my career, I was tense and over-pushing. Now I stay calm, even when conditions change, and maximise every opportunity."

Russell described the weekend in Singapore as "probably my most dominant", though he called last year's Las Vegas win "pretty cool". He added that Mercedes would analyse their performance to understand the car's pace.

After securing pole position by 0.182 seconds over Verstappen, Russell maintained the lead into the first corner and managed his tyres to keep challengers at bay. "Lando looked incredibly fast, often within a second of Max, but I held them off," he said.

Russell contract agreement expected soon

Out of contract at the end of the season, Russell faced uncertainty before Red Bull confirmed Max Verstappen's stay. Team principal Toto Wolff has said a new deal is "only a matter of time", with an announcement expected before the United States Grand Prix.

Wolff praised Russell's consistency: "He's been formidable all year. When car and driver align perfectly, you see this dominant formula."

George Russell's commanding display in Singapore has solidified his status as a championship contender, reflecting his maturity and improved performance.
