Numbers are just numbers. If you have type 2 diabetes, don’t let those numbers bring you down. Follow these tips to overcome the challenge.

Numbers are simply that—numbers.

Living with diabetes means constantly keeping an eye on various numbers.

You need to track your A1C levels, fasting glucose, post-meal glucose, blood pressure, cholesterol, and more.

Sometimes, when your numbers don’t align with what you hoped for, it’s easy to feel emotionally overwhelmed or discouraged about managing your condition.

I know from experience that when my numbers are out of range, I often feel down and drained, but I try to improve and bring them back to where they should be.

However, your numbers don’t have to ruin your day. Here are some strategies that help me handle disappointment or embarrassment over my results.

Don’t Treat Your Numbers Like a Pass or Fail Grade

I remind myself that these numbers aren’t a test score.

Your numbers can show you both what’s working and what might need adjustment in managing your diabetes.

If your A1C or blood sugar levels are high, it’s a sign that something can be improved, and it’s a perfect opportunity to consult your healthcare provider.

Remember: A Number Doesn’t Define Your Worth

When managing diabetes, keep in mind that a number is just a number.

It might feel like the number reflects something you did or who you are, but it doesn’t measure your value as a person.

A chronic illness doesn’t define you. The numbers you see daily are simply guides for your next steps.

Everyone Has Tough Days

You’re not alone—everyone faces setbacks!

Maybe you ordered a diet soda but got a regular one by mistake.

Perhaps you had to skip a workout because of family obligations or feeling unwell.

These things happen to all of us. Remember, it doesn’t make you a bad person.

Do Something That Lifts Your Spirits

Whether it’s listening to music, dancing, or painting, engaging in activities you love can help release heavy emotions.

Take time to nurture yourself and boost your mood.

Review Your Patterns and Consult Your Doctor

If your numbers remain out of control, it’s okay to pause and reach out to your healthcare professional.

Talking to your doctor can feel intimidating or uncomfortable, but they’re there to support you.

Be open and honest, and they can help you find ways to improve.

Connect With Others Who Understand

You don’t have to manage diabetes on your own.

Sometimes, talking to friends who also have diabetes can provide inspiration and helpful tips when numbers stress you out.

Remember: Everything Will Be Okay

It’s easy to feel like it’s the end of the world when you see an unfavorable number.

Take a deep breath and remind yourself that things will get better.

Even if your numbers aren’t where you want them, you can always start fresh.

Commit to trying again and doing your best each new day.
