However, this does not mean the health risks have vanished. Visionaries like Bill Gates warned years ago that humanity would continue to face outbreaks of various diseases. Unfortunately, these warnings are becoming reality.
The first major concern this season is the resurgence of monkeypox, which began spreading rapidly in early May. Although previously known to scientists, recent infection rates have surged. According to the World Health Organization, most patients recover fully with appropriate treatment, but severe cases can occur.
Shortly after, Europe faced an unusual outbreak of pediatric hepatitis. Since early spring, nearly 350 cases have been reported, with the cause still unknown. More than 90% of affected children required hospitalization, some tragically passed away, and about 40 needed liver transplants. Experts emphasize that while these numbers are concerning, they do not warrant panic but require careful monitoring.
The challenges continue: on June 22, the UK Health Security Agency announced a polio outbreak after detecting the virus in London's wastewater. Scientists believe the virus originated from a person recently vaccinated with a live vaccine, likely an international visitor.
Currently, the risk of transmission remains very low as most British children are vaccinated against polio by age 14. Nevertheless, health authorities urge parents to ensure their children’s vaccinations are up to date.
While the UK situation is under control, Spain presents more alarming news. For the first time in 40 years, a cholera case was confirmed on a farm in the Toledo province, which has been promptly quarantined.
The infected individual is a minor who contracted the disease after drinking well water. Though the case was recorded several days ago, it has only recently come to public attention.
The girl received immediate medical care and is currently in stable condition.
Authorities are investigating the water source, contamination causes, and potential additional cases to prevent a widespread cholera outbreak.
