This plant has been classified as a unique species named Nepenthes pudica — with 'pudica' derived from Latin meaning 'shy'.
Scientists believe these underground pitchers evolved as an adaptation to the plant’s high-altitude, dry habitat atop mountain ridges where water is scarce and above-ground insects are limited. The subterranean cavities provide a more stable environment with higher humidity and, during dry periods, a richer supply of potential prey.
