Discover the Ultimate Internet Radio Recorder with Snowtape 2

Explore Snowtape 2, the innovative internet radio recording app that preserves audio quality and offers advanced features for seamless streaming and recording.

Recently, a major update was released for the popular internet radio recording application, Snowtape.

The standout feature is the ability to save audio streams without re-encoding (available for MP3/AAC+ formats only), eliminating the typical quality loss caused by conversion. Since few stations broadcast at high bitrates, preserving the original stream is a significant advantage compared to converting a 64 kbps MP3 stream to 160 kbps, which degrades audio quality. The supported formats have also expanded to include MP3, AAC+, Ogg Vorbis, and WMA.

The app’s interface will feel familiar to Mac users, drawing clear inspiration from iTunes. It even features a mini-controller that provides quick access to essential functions while taking up minimal screen space.

Recording is straightforward: simply press the “red button” or schedule recordings in advance. Want to listen to a different station while recording? No problem. Snowtape 2 allows simultaneous recording of multiple streams, provided your internet bandwidth and disk space can accommodate it. Recorded shows are saved in a collection where the app attempts to organize files neatly, although manual editing of start/end points or adding album art may still be necessary depending on the station. The developers have flagged stations best suited for recording to help users, though this adds some extra information clutter.

The biggest drawback of Snowtape 2 is its station directory. It’s so complex that filtering stations by specific genres and bitrate—like finding industrial music stations streaming at 128 kbps or higher—can be quite challenging. Features like Tune In, favorites, and import are available but can feel overwhelming. The local stations list is a nice touch, but Snowtape mistakenly assumes the user is located in the Czech Republic. On the bright side, managing imported stations works smoothly without any issues.

Among the new version’s handy features are improved playlist management, AirTunes support (which lets you stream audio directly to Apple TV or Airport Express), and trendy last.fm scrobbling integration.

In summary, Snowtape 2 is a solid choice for internet radio listening and recording, offering several unique capabilities that set it apart.

Note: Listening to radio with Snowtape 2 is free, but recording functionality requires a purchase of $33. Upgrading from the previous version costs half that amount.
