Discover the Real User Experience with the Latest iPhone

An insightful alternative perspective on the latest iPhone model, covering design, usability, camera, battery life, and storage options to help you make an informed decision.

Recently, our chief editor shared his thoughts after two weeks of using the latest iPhone. After carefully reviewing his article, I felt it was important to provide an alternative viewpoint, as I disagreed with some of his observations. Offering two perspectives can be valuable for readers still debating whether to upgrade from their older devices to the newest iPhone. Here, I share my personal experience with this new smartphone.

I've been using the phone for over two weeks now, acquiring it just a day after our editor. Let's dive into the details.

Design and Ergonomics

The design of the latest iPhone is impressive. The front panel, especially in the Space Grey variant, features elegantly rounded display edges that enhance its premium look. However, in the Gold and Silver versions, the contrast between the black screen and the lighter body reduces the sense of seamlessness. Despite these curves, the phone remains comfortable to hold. Initially, it might feel a bit slippery due to its thin and lightweight build, but this is mostly a psychological effect as users tend to handle new devices more cautiously. Most users will likely use a protective case, which adds bulk but also improves grip and protection against drops.

Display and Lock Button Placement

Lock button relocated to the right edge for ergonomic reasons

With the increased screen size, one common concern is how easily the phone can be used with one hand. The double-tap on Touch ID helps mitigate reachability issues, but reaching the left side of the screen can still be challenging, especially when switching keyboard modes. I agree with our editor that two-handed use becomes more frequent unless you have particularly long fingers. Otherwise, one-handed use is manageable.

A more significant inconvenience is the new position of the lock button on the right edge. While adapting to this change isn’t difficult, it causes practical issues during gaming or video playback. Holding the phone horizontally with the Home button on the left places the lock button under the ring finger, which can lead to accidental presses when adjusting volume. The solution is to hold the phone with the Home button on the right side, which is easier to adjust to than growing longer fingers.

Another annoyance is accidental lock button presses when the phone is in your pants pocket. Due to the larger screen, users often rotate the device slightly for comfort, which frequently triggers the lock button unintentionally. While not harmful, it detracts from the seamless ergonomic experience Apple is known for.

Operating System and Camera Performance

Camera delivers sharp photos and smooth videos

I fully agree with our chief editor on two points: the camera is outstanding, capturing excellent photos and videos. However, iOS still has some quirks. Its stability and performance are only slightly improved compared to previous models like the iPhone 5 or 5S. I expect future updates to address these issues and enhance the overall user experience.

Battery Life Insights

Unfortunately, no breakthrough in battery life has occurred. The battery capacity has increased slightly but doesn’t extend usage to multiple days without charging. That said, battery life has improved somewhat. Initially, the battery may drain faster than older models but stabilizes after a few days, providing a full day of active use, which is acceptable for most users.

Interestingly, enabling LTE on the device seems to extend battery life by an additional one to two hours. The reason for this is unclear, but the effect is noticeable.

Choosing the Right Storage Capacity

Storage options range to suit different user needs

Deciding on storage size is always personal. The 64GB version is the most balanced choice for most users. I opted for the 16GB model and manage well despite many installed apps, possibly because I don’t take many photos. However, storage fills up not only with photos but also with music, videos, and app caches.

My approach is to rely heavily on cloud storage. Streaming music from services like SoundCloud or cloud-based libraries reduces local storage needs. If you have good 3G or LTE coverage, storing files in the cloud can be more convenient and efficient.

Final Thoughts

In conclusion, the latest iPhone is an excellent device overall. It’s impossible to satisfy everyone, but even those who previously preferred Android for its larger screens may find the new iPhone sizes, including the Plus model, worth considering.
