Creators of 'Stranger Things' Reveal Details About Season 4, Comparing It to 'Game of Thrones'
Discover the epic scale and multiple storylines of Stranger Things Season 4, as creators Matt and Ross Duffer share exclusive insights and comparisons to Game of Thrones.
Season 4 of Stranger Things promises three intertwined storylines, episodes exceeding an hour, and answers to long-standing questions about the mysterious Upside Down.
In an exclusive interview with Deadline, creators Matt and Ross Duffer unveiled exciting details about the upcoming fourth season. They emphasized that the long wait for the new season will be rewarded with an epic and expansive narrative.
This season features a significantly larger scope and record-breaking episode lengths.
We jokingly call this our 'Game of Thrones' season because the episodes are so extended, and that’s what makes this season uniquely grand.
— Matt Duffer
The Duffers explained that the comparison to Game of Thrones goes beyond episode length to include multiple parallel storylines unfolding simultaneously.

The Byers family moved away at the end of Season 3 and are now in California — we've always wanted that setting to feel like a suburban 'E.T.' vibe, which we finally achieved this year in the desert. Meanwhile, Hopper is in Russia, and of course, the Hawkins group remains. So, we have these three storylines that are connected and interwoven but each carries a very distinct tone.
— Matt Duffer
Ross Duffer noted that since Season 3, they knew the next chapter would involve scattered locations but underestimated how expansive the season would become.
We didn’t fully realize it until about halfway through, especially considering how many stories we wanted to tell this season. Game of Thrones was a reference point, but for us, this season is about revelations and finally giving the audience some answers.
— Ross Duffer
The creators confirmed that viewers will finally gain genuine clarity about the exact nature of the supernatural phenomena haunting Hawkins since the show's inception.

When we filmed Season 1, Netflix asked us about the mythology. So we wrote a massive 20-page document detailing everything about what’s happening and what the Upside Down really is. Each season peels back layers like an onion. This season, we wanted to truly dive deep and reveal some answers. To do it right, we needed more time, which is why the show grew bigger and bigger.
— Ross Duffer
Matt added that midway through production, they realized an additional episode was necessary to cover every planned plot twist. Netflix quickly approved the extension, and each episode is packed with fresh content.
According to Matt, no episode in Season 4 is under an hour long, making the total runtime nearly double that of any previous season. This extended duration contributed significantly to the lengthy filming process.
Remember, the first part of Stranger Things Season 4 premieres on May 27, with the second part following on July 1. While waiting, you can revisit the events of Season 3, which originally aired in 2019.
