Bob Simpson, former Australia Test captain and coach, has died at the age of 89.
Simpson featured in 62 Test matches from 1957 to 1978, amassing 4,869 runs at an average of 46.81, including ten centuries, while also taking 71 wickets with his leg-spin and earning acclaim as one of the game’s finest slip fielders.
After initially retiring in 1968, he was recalled in 1978 to lead Australia as captain at 41, following the defection of several players to World Series Cricket.
Mike Baird, chair of Cricket Australia, said: “Bob Simpson was one of the greats of Australian cricket. His return from retirement to guide the team through the World Series Cricket era was a service to the sport, and his coaching laid the groundwork for a golden generation.”
Appointed coach in 1986, Simpson reversed Australia’s fortunes, coaching a rebuilt side led by Allan Border that won the 1987 World Cup and Test series against England and the West Indies.
He introduced future stars such as Mark Waugh, Shane Warne, Glenn McGrath and Ricky Ponting, establishing the platform for Australia’s dominance in the 1990s.
After 1996, Simpson coached in English county cricket and consulted for the Netherlands and India.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese wrote: “As a player, captain and coach, Bob Simpson set the highest standards. He will be long remembered by the game he loved.”
Simpson’s leadership and coaching transformed Australian cricket, laying the foundations for decades of success.
