Atletico head coach Diego Simeone received a red card following a heated exchange with a fan after Virgil van Dijk’s late strike secured Liverpool’s 3-2 victory in their Champions League clash at Anfield.

Video footage appears to show a member of Atletico’s backroom staff spitting into the crowd during the ensuing melee close to the away bench.

UEFA will examine all official reports and video evidence to determine if disciplinary measures are required. Atletico Madrid has also launched an internal investigation but has declined to comment publicly.

Liverpool will supply relevant CCTV footage and other information to aid UEFA’s inquiry.

After the match, Simeone said: “It’s never ideal when managers react. If fans direct insults or racist remarks at you, anyone can get angry. I had no choice but to respond as a human being.”

“We will thoroughly review the incident to address any misconduct and uphold the integrity of the match,” a club statement said.
