Air Peace pilot and co-pilot test positive for alcohol after runway excursion

After a Port Harcourt runway excursion, tests revealed alcohol in the pilot and co-pilot's systems and THC in a cabin crew member; the pilot has been dismissed and the co-pilot cleared to fly.

Air Peace flight crew tested positive for alcohol after a Boeing 737 veered off the Port Harcourt runway during a July landing, Nigeria’s Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has confirmed.

Screening showed both the 64-year-old pilot and his co-pilot had Ethyl Glucuronide (EtG) in their systems, indicating recent alcohol use; a cabin crew member also tested positive for THC, the psychoactive ingredient in cannabis. All 103 passengers and crew were unharmed.

Air Peace has dismissed the veteran pilot for safety breaches. The 28-year-old co-pilot, cleared by the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), has resumed duties. The carrier says it has yet to receive official toxicology reports from the NSIB.

The incident highlights ongoing concerns over procedural compliance and drug and alcohol screening protocols. The NSIB’s investigation is active, with recommendations for enhanced training and stricter internal controls.
