A Sisterly Reunion
In 1992, the genetic parents of Emma had frozen another embryo. When Tina and Ben discovered the existence of Emma’s genetic sister, they decided to try again. This second embryo transfer was also successful, and Molly was born.
Now, for five years, Emma and Molly have grown up side by side. Tina joyfully shares moments of the sisters exploring the world together on social media, noting how alike they look when laughing, frowning, or showing emotion. “We are overjoyed. Even now, I’m amazed at how everything unfolded. Five years ago, if someone told me I’d have two daughters instead of one, I would have thought they were crazy.”
Looking Ahead
Embryos stored at the NEDC have no fixed expiration date. This means future children might be born from embryos frozen even longer than Emma and Molly’s 24 and 27 years. “It’s quite possible that someday a child will be born from an embryo frozen for 30 years or more,” said Mark Mellinger, a representative of the center.
Notably, the embryo adoption process involves matching donors with recipient families based on specific criteria such as age, height, and other characteristics to ensure compatibility.
