Unlocking Medicare Benefits: How Online Therapy Can Support Your Mental Health

Discover how Medicare supports online therapy and mental health care options, including eligibility criteria and telehealth coverage updates for 2025.

Medicare offers coverage for telehealth services, including online therapy, through Part B and Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans. This convenient option lets you connect with licensed mental health professionals remotely via computer or smartphone, providing accessible care from the comfort of your home.

Starting September 2025, new regulations will adjust eligibility for telehealth services, focusing on specific criteria to ensure appropriate access.

Eligibility Criteria for Medicare-Covered Online Therapy

Throughout the first nine months of 2025, all Medicare beneficiaries can access telehealth services nationwide, including from their homes. However, beginning in September 2025, coverage will generally require patients to be located at a doctor's office or medical facility in designated rural areas to qualify for Medicare-covered telehealth.

Notably, there are important exceptions. After September 30, 2025, Medicare will continue to cover online therapy sessions conducted at home if they involve the diagnosis, evaluation, or treatment of mental or behavioral health disorders.

Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans may offer broader telehealth benefits, including expanded online therapy access. To understand your specific coverage and eligibility, it’s essential to consult both your healthcare provider and insurance plan representative.

Additional Mental Health Services Covered by Medicare

If you do not meet the updated telehealth criteria, Medicare still provides various mental health services through Part B in outpatient settings, such as:

  • Free depression screenings at your doctor's office
  • Individual or group psychotherapy with qualified professionals
  • Family counseling sessions
  • Comprehensive psychiatric evaluations

After satisfying the Part B deductible of $257, beneficiaries typically pay 20% of the Medicare-approved amount for these services. Additional copayments may apply depending on the service location.
