Newcastle heavy metal band Pigsx7 launches a Christmas instrument drive, collecting second-hand gear to help low-income families keep making music this festive season and empower local youth.

A Newcastle-based heavy metal band is inviting the community to donate unused musical gear to support families in need this Christmas.

Pigsx7, formed 14 years ago, are calling for pre-loved instruments, hoping to level the playing field for aspiring musicians in the northeast who are priced out of gear and studio time.

Guitarist Adam Sykes said the drive aims to open doors for young players who might not have the financial backing to buy gear for practice and gigs.

Vocalist Matt Baty noted they have already received guitars and pedals, with some items like a saxophone and DJ decks also offered, but more donations are needed.

"A lot of artists reach the top because they could rely on gear and studio time funded by privilege," Baty said. "When money is tight, that support disappears and creativity suffers."

Sykes said the cost of instruments, rehearsal rooms, and recording studio time creates a major barrier for would-be musicians.

Baty added that economic pressures mean music and other arts can be pushed to the back burner for many families.

"I'd rather they go somewhere where they're going to be loved, used, and hopefully inspire someone later on," he said.

The band asks people to email info@pigsx7.com to organise a collection. Donors can also drop gear at The Cluny in the Ouseburn after coordinating with the band. All equipment will be PAT tested before being donated to a local charity.

Sykes added that the band's success stems from a mix of luck and commitment to making music, and hopes this drive helps others pursue similar paths.

Both members encouraged donations of any usable gear, even small items like a distortion pedal, which can make a difference for a learner.
