However, with the official release of iOS 14, this feature was available only briefly. On September 18, YouTube restricted access to PiP mode for non-premium users, effectively blocking it.
Currently, the PiP icon remains visible when you play a YouTube video in full-screen mode. But if you tap it without a YouTube Premium subscription, the video briefly shrinks into a small window before reverting back to the standard viewing mode. Interestingly, PiP still works for embedded YouTube videos on websites.

iPad users have reported that PiP mode remains accessible in Safari without a subscription. It remains unclear whether YouTube's restriction on iPhones was accidental or if similar limitations will be applied to iPads in the future. Given that the app requires a subscription for PiP, the latter seems more likely. Both Google and Apple have declined to comment on the matter.
Update as of October 3: With the release of iOS 14.0.1, the picture-in-picture feature has been restored in Safari, allowing users to enjoy PiP mode again without a subscription.
