Czech police arrest elusive motorway racing car driver

Police in the Czech Republic have arrested a man believed to be the driver of a Formula 1–style racing car spotted on motorways since 2019.

Officers traced the red car with Ferrari livery to a residence in Buk, about 60km southwest of Prague, following a recent sighting on the D4 motorway.

Video footage showed the car pulling into a petrol station before returning to the property.

The 51-year-old suspect was taken into custody after initially refusing to leave the vehicle at his home garage.

Local media captured him in full racing suit and helmet, arguing with officers and insisting they were trespassing.

He eventually agreed to go to the police station for questioning but remained silent throughout.

His son told reporters authorities deployed dozens of patrol cars and a helicopter, calling the reaction excessive for a traffic violation they deny committing.

Police first encountered the so-called phantom driver in 2019, when images of the car on the highway circulated online. Investigators questioned the registered owner, who denied driving the vehicle. It is unclear if that person is the same man now in custody.

Despite frequent descriptions as a Ferrari Formula 1 car, the vehicle is in fact a Dallara GP2/08 used in the GP2 series, now known as the FIA Formula 2 Championship.

The owner faces fines for driving on the motorway without headlights, indicators or number plates.

After more than four years of eluding authorities, the mystery of the red racing car on Czech motorways comes to an end with the driver’s arrest.
