At 35 years old, Yuri Kondratchik, grandson of the legendary Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, has chosen a life path distinct from his famous grandfather. Named after the first man in space by Gagarin's youngest daughter, Galina, Yuri Jr. defied family expectations by not pursuing a career related to space or aviation. In fact, childhood games never involved pretending to be a cosmonaut.
Nevertheless, fate intertwined him with aviation—Yuri Kondratchik is now the director of the Khabarovsk Airport in Russia's Far East. Due to his different surname, many people don’t immediately connect him to the Gagarin legacy, but eventually, the remarkable family link comes to light.
Why is he in the spotlight now? Recently, it was announced that Yuri Kondratchik is running for a seat in the Khabarovsk Regional Duma representing the "New People" party. He secured the second position on the regional party list, right after State Duma deputy Roza Chemeris.
After completing high school, Yuri graduated from the Faculty of Public Administration at Moscow State University. Initially, he intended to follow in his father's footsteps, who was a pediatric hematologist. However, his father advised against pursuing this demanding career, which influenced Yuri's decision.
Together with his wife, Yuri is raising their son, Leonid. The family found life in bustling Moscow overwhelming and relocated to Khabarovsk, where they have lived for over four and a half years.
"My passion has always been public and state administration, and I made my career choice long before graduation. When an interesting opportunity arose, destiny led me to the Russian Far East," Yuri shared in an interview with KP.
Yuri's wife's parents live in Saratov, which allowed him to visit the city where Yuri Gagarin studied. The famed cosmonaut graduated from the Saratov Industrial Technical School, near which he landed on April 12, 1961, after his historic spaceflight.
Although Yuri does not use the Gagarin surname, he openly acknowledges the responsibility that comes with his heritage. He takes great pride in being part of the Gagarin family.
There is an undeniable physical resemblance between grandfather and grandson—whether it’s the determined chin or the genuine smile. Many also note how similar their voices sound.
Yuri also shared a charming trait inherited from his grandfather: if he hasn’t had enough sleep, he can nap anywhere, anytime.
