Puma is bringing back the iconic RS-Computer sneakers, a model that was truly ahead of its time. Originally launched in 1986, these sneakers were capable of tracking steps, measuring distance traveled, and monitoring calories burned.
Back then, miniaturizing all the necessary electronics was a challenge, which led to a prominent heel bulge housing sensors and a 16-pin connector for wired connection to computers like the Apple II, Commodore 64, or IBM PC. Special software allowed users to analyze their physical activity data on these devices.
The revamped edition retains the classic design but now features Bluetooth connectivity and the RS-Computer Shoe app available for Android and iOS. The app embraces a nostalgic retro look with charming 8-bit graphics.
Inside the shoe, a modern three-axis accelerometer and memory module store workout data for up to 30 days. Charging is conveniently done via a USB port.
This special edition of Puma RS-Computer sneakers will be released as a limited run of 86 pairs, available exclusively in select stores across Berlin, Tokyo, and London starting December 13. Pricing details are yet to be announced.
It’s worth noting that the RS-Computer wasn’t the first smart sneaker. Two years earlier, in 1984, Adidas introduced the Micropacer running shoes, which tracked distance, running speed, and calories burned through a micro sensor embedded in the left shoe’s toe.
All data was displayed on a small screen embedded directly on the tongue, though it lacked any PC connectivity ports.
