NYC Shooter Bought Rifle from Las Vegas Casino Supervisor, Police Say

Police say the gunman who killed four in a Manhattan skyscraper obtained the semi-automatic rifle from his boss at a Las Vegas casino, prompting legal scrutiny.

A New York City office building attack that killed four people was carried out with a rifle bought from a Las Vegas casino supervisor, investigators said.

Weapon sale and background

Shane Tamura, 27, sourced the semi-automatic rifle from his boss at the Horseshoe Casino for $1,400. The supervisor, who worked with Tamura in surveillance, is cooperating with authorities and has not been charged. It remains unclear if the private sale complied with Nevada law, which requires background checks for gun purchases.

The supervisor also sold Tamura a black BMW, which he then drove across the country to Manhattan.

Investigation findings

Police found anti-psychotic medication and a suicide note in Tamura's Las Vegas apartment. In the note, he claimed to suffer from chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) and apologized to his former superior. Tamura died by suicide at the scene.

Authorities also recovered a legally purchased pistol from his vehicle. He was licensed to carry a concealed firearm in Nevada.

Victims and tributes

The shooting claimed the lives of NYPD Officer Didarul Islam; corporate executive Wesley LePatner; security guard Aland Etienne; and real estate worker Julia Hyman. Investigators believe Tamura may have targeted offices of the National Football League, located in the building.

Julia Hyman, a 2020 Cornell graduate, was remembered by her uncle for her 'passion, depth and integrity.' A funeral service was held in Manhattan. Officer Islam, an immigrant from Bangladesh who served three years with the NYPD, will be honored with a promotion to detective posthumously.

Investigators are probing a private gun sale between a casino supervisor and an employee that enabled a fatal shooting in New York, highlighting gaps in background check enforcement.
